A portrait in an alleyway in London

A young black woman in a blue dress and yellow tights stands with a hand on her hip, looking up and right

There's a story behind this portrait...

Shot on the streets of London down by Covent Garden. It was all random editorial stuff, and the model was a huge amount of fun.

We ducked off a main street down this side alley because there was something interesting going on with the light. Took a few shots and then all hell breaks out.

Half a dozen guys, dodgy as you like, rock up. I know something is brewing because they're removing security tags from clothes. Then comes the hassle. First at me for having a camera, then at the "hot black girl".

Exit stage left pretty sharpish, making sure she's in front and there's enough noise (not shouting for help, just loud in responding to their taunts) to start attracting attention at the other end of the alley.

Safe exit. Model OK. Bit shaken. And a bit of a laugh afterwards at the "close escape".

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I always shot in alleyways that cut between two roads.
